What You Never Knew You Needed to Know About IPAs

We’ve all heard the saying, “April showers bring May flowers.” Both cute and quite accurate, the phrase has helped North American’s acknowledge the sometimes inconvenient rainy season as necessary to prepare for beautiful spring blooms. We have our own saying here at 2-Row Distributing and it goes a little something like:

“Long April days lead to IPA May!”

Now, we don’t necessarily deem those long April days as inconvenient- who doesn’t love extra hours of sunlight at this time of year? But we have waited in anticipation for the month we have dubbed “IPA May!

A bitter tasting brew (because of the extra dose of hops that was added in the 1800’s to preserve the beer as it was transported to India), the India Pale Ale has arguably become the most popular type of craft beer. Therefore, we designate a month to celebrate, educate, and stimulate the taste buds of Gulf Coast beer drinkers. So, why should you choose an IPA this month? We’re here to tell you 4 reasons.

  1. Flavor
Did you know that all 5 of our senses work together to create flavor? It’s not just our taste buds. The golden color and aromas put off by this delectable brew all contribute to the flavor experience when you drink an IPA.
  2. Stylistic Diversity
There are different categories and styles of IPAs. Meaning, ingredients and or techniques are added to the brewing process to individualize these beers making the possibilities endless for both the brew and drinkers. There’s Dry-Hopped, Single-Hopped, and Fresh-Hopped. There’s West Coast IPA, New England Style IPA, Hazy IPA, and Juicy IPA just to name a few.
  3. Palette Advancement
Tastes change over time. Think about it, growing up, you were forced to eat your vegetables. As an adult, every now-and-then you may crave the now trendy Brussel sprout. Such is the case with beer. While you may not immediately take to the sometimes “bitter” taste of an IPA, as your palette becomes more experienced, and you begin to crave an IPA, you may just call yourself a connoisseur.
  4. It’s a Safe Bet
While a new beer drinker’s taste buds may take some time to adapt to the nature of an IPA, for a seasoned beer drinker, an IPA becomes their “go-to” or “old faithful.” No one has ever judged a person for choosing an IPA at a bar.

Now that you know why you should take advantage of IPA May, which IPA’s should you choose? 2-Row Distributing has a wide variety of IPAs to choose from.
